An exhibition of
Gregg Simpson's charcoal drawings
and frottages was exhibited at the Salle du Couvent in the
village of
Seillans, near Cannes, France.
This village was the
last
home
of the great
surrealist artist, Max Ernst and holds special
significance
for the
Simpson,
who
has always felt a kinship with Ernst's work. The surrealist techniques
of frottage,
pioneered by Max
Ernst, and
also
automaticism, later adopted and developed by the abstract expressionists, are
the
operative principles
in this
exhibition. Many of the works
begin as frottages and
are developed
into finished
compositions
utilizing strong application of charcoal, alternating
with use of the eraser.
