The
works in this suite of small panels
are
executed in thick oil paint straight out of the tube, applied
with
a painting knife. The use of direct mark making and the building
up
of succesive layers recalls the
work of
the Parisian tachist painters in
the
1950's.
There is
often a
landscape reference in these works and a
tendency
towards blurring the borders of
realism
and abstraction, a quality also found in
the
work of Nicholas de Stael, an artist who was an
influence on the series.
