Field Works 1991-1995
Read about
the Series
In
these mixed media works, Simpson was involved in natural materials
mixed
with acrylic paste and paint. In this series, painted surfaces were
built
up by incorporating organic materials such as wood and leaves
along
with found objects blended together with acrylic paint and modelling
paste.
The artist used these elements to heighten densities and textures in
this
series of painted assemblages. His goal was to create an alternative
approach
to landscape painting.
This
series reflects Gregg Simpson's ongoing dialogue with the west coast
rainforest
where he grew up in a densely wooded part of Vancouver's North
Shore.
Living near a deep canyon amid tall evergreens, the artist's work has
long
been informed by the encompassing presence of natural forces in these
nearly
primeval settings.
