These works are a signature series of the artist from his neo-surrealist period. Simpson put these archetypal forms of claws, shark fins, and crescent moons through various formal, and poetic, transformations. Joan Lowndes, Vancouver Sun art critic in the 1970's, wrote that these are " images from the laboratory of a mad geneticist. "
