Excavations is a group of paintings and large charcoal drawings which appear to depict the results of an archaeological or paleontological dig. Through a variety of scraping and pouring techniques, Simpson created a series of layes to gradually reveal embedded shapes and forms. 

Excavations was the last major series in which Simpson used variations on the grattage (scraping) technique he had used on small panels and  
small canvases in the 1970's. 

These works were exhibited as part of an exhibition of Selected Works from 1972-1884 at the Art Gallery of Algoma, Salut St. marie, Ontario. See installation shots below:
