About the Series
This
series of oil paintings and the accompanying suite of charcoal
drawings,
entitled Speed of Light, started in Montreal, during a sojurn
there
in 1985. Simpson began working on the series of organic
abstractions
just before returning to the west coast in 1985. These works
invite
us into a realm populated by totemic beings which are like the
phenomenon
of simulacara in nature, where rocks, or landforms, occasionally
resemble
animals or people.
